Work Life Balance - A Myth or Reality
Work life balance is the most talked concept from generations, but we can see that organisations and individuals have taken this concept into major consideration in the recent times in order to solve the problem of maintaining a good work life balance.
Work life balance is the balance between the work life and our personal life. It was a major concern in the early times as work pressure was high and people look for good source of compensation for work they did, that they have to sacrifice their personal life to a certain extent. According to studies that it is noticed that men usually are highly a victim to not maintaining a good work life balance as it has been demonstrated that men prioritize their work duties over their family duties to provide financial support for their families, whereas women prioritize their family life.
Spending long hours at work due to inflexibility, shifting in work requirements, overtime or evening work duties leads towards not maintaining a good work life balance. It was also observed that if there is no good work life balance maintained it would directly effect the performance of an individual and also lead to a major interpersonal conflict which becomes difficult to manage and overcome. Hence we can say that work life balance was a Myth until the technological advancement came to existence.
In reality we should thank and credit the emergence of technological advances which has played a major role in making it possible for work tasks to be accomplished faster due to the use of smartphones, email, video-chat, and other technological software. These technology advances facilitate individuals to work without having a typical '9 to 5' work day and allow individuals to have an option of working from home which would help them to finish their household works, spend time with family and friends and also concentrate on their area or interest simultaneously along with their work life.
A positive addition to this is pandemic of coronavirus which is effecting the economy, work culture and regular routine on one hand whereas  we can say that it has been playing an amazing role in maintaining a good work like balance. The government implemtation of nation wide lockdown for the betterment of the citizens of the country, individuals are getting time to spend most of the time with their family and are involving in activities which enhances their area of interest as the technological advancement has come to major advantage at this point of time allowing individuals to work from home which helps in safeguarding the individuals both from the organisation point of view and from the country's end.
Following certain interviews and articles of work life balance we can say that, it is high time that organisations realise the advantage of work life balance, it would result in employees reporting a increased job satisfaction, greater sense of job security, better physical and mental health, reduced levels of job stress. In fact, work life balance does not only benefit the employee, but also the organization. Once work life balance has been introduced to the employee, the organization faces less absenteeism, lateness and staff turnover rates. In addition, there is an increase retention of employees, higher employee loyalty and commitment towards the organization, improved productivity.
Hence in reality work life balance allowed to be maintained well by the organisation can always looked upon to give a positive return to the organisation and individual performance.
