 COMMON MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS FACED BY MBAs STUDENTS

@Priyanshi Singh

DEPRESSION: - According to recent studies, one in five college students suffers from some sort of recurring feelings of self-loathing and immense sadness. This may be the result of unhealthy amounts of stress and anxiety. This may also be the result of failing to fit into groups and not making friends. Plus, the slew of comparisons facilitated by Instagram has only made this worse. Not only do college students compare themselves with others on the basis of their looks and physical appearance, but they compare social status and materialistic possessions as well. All of these have a severe effect on the mental health of students. If not kept in check, feelings of depression can become increasingly intense and can lead to suicidal thoughts. That is why students are recommended to talk to people who are their well-wishers and share their grievances with them. Talking and sharing are not only ways to unload your mind, but they are also a form of self-therapy.

ANXIETY AND STRESS: - According to recent studies, one in five college students suffers from some sort of recurring feelings of self-loathing and immense sadness. This may be the result of unhealthy amounts of stress and anxiety. This may also be the result of failing to fit into groups and not making friends. Plus, the slew of comparisons facilitated by Instagram has only made this worse. Talking and sharing are not only ways to unload your mind, but they are also a form of self-therapy.

ADDICTION: - All the stress, anxiety and suicidal thoughts add up to exorbitant levels. To cope up with it, many of the students resort to unhealthy methods. Combined with the wrong company, they can get exposed to cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana. This can lead to complications in their lives, affecting them both physically and emotionally. It can also lead to extreme weakness and can affect their bodies in ways that cannot be reversed. Thus, they spiral further into an abyss of substance abuse and suicidal thoughts. All this seriously worsens the mental health of students.

Students are at a very sensitive and impressionable age in college. This is why they must navigate this phase of their lives carefully to keep their sanity and stature. They must also be encouraged to ask for professional care if needed. The mental health of students is in general quite fragile and even the smallest hint of any mental disorder should not be overlooked under any circumstances.

Business schools, in particular, are associated with a high-stress level. The expense, the time commitment, the extracurricular activities and the competitive nature of MBA programs all contribute to the pressure students face. For international students, depression can sit atop a ream of other issues such as homesickness and culture shock.

In fact, Harvard Business School found that almost half of all its students had experienced serious depression. While there are services available to help students, it can be difficult for those affected to seek out help.

Depression is an isolating experience, particularly for students who are cut off from their families. It can feel as though you’re the only person suffering to this extent, like everyone else is able to fulfil their potential and there’s something ‘wrong’ with you for not taking everything in your stride. This is not the case. At Harvard Business School, the mental health services department sees up to 10% of the student body. It’s estimated that 4% of people globally will experience depression and one in four will be affected by some kind of neurological disorder during their lives – so by no means are these issues rare.

This is a large stressor for full-time students. They feel pressure from their families, the school, their peers, and themselves to find the perfect job before graduation. This is especially mentally taxing for international students who need to worry about obtaining a visa.  The other common issue among business students is trying to balance multiple priorities, with high pressure to excel at all of them.

BEST WAY TO OVERCOME MENTAL ISSUE FACED BY MBAs STUDENT

·   Get Closer to Nature: - We all live with worries and fears, uncertainties, losses that leave us sad and pressures that make us feel stressed.

Nature can have a really calming effect on us. We have been living around other animals and plants for thousands of years. Some people say nature helps them feel calmer, more hopeful and less alone. Our research found that going for a walk was the UK adults’ favourite way of coping with stress during the pandemic in 2020.

·       Learn to understand and manage your feelings: -  Feeling very upset can interfere with our lives, making it hard to think clearly or work, relax, study, sleep or deal with other people. It often helps to give our feelings our attention without judging them, without telling ourselves we’re stupid or weak to feel the way we do. It may seem strange and uncomfortable to do this. But practice and patience with ourselves will help.

·       Talk to someone you trust to support: - Many of us have learned to bottle things up inside us and try to ignore painful feelings. It can take a lot of courage to tell someone else how we’re feeling or what we’re finding hard, especially if we don’t usually do that kind of thing. Just talking things through with a person we trust can help and feel like a relief.

·   Be aware of using drugs and/or alcohol to cope with difficult feelings: - No one wants to feel bad; for some people, drugs and/or alcohol offer temporary relief. Unfortunately, they don’t stop the feelings from returning and may make things worse or create other problems, including damage to mental and physical health, relationships, work, or study. If you think you may be using drugs or alcohol to cope with difficult feelings, it may help to notice it without beating yourself up about it. Being understanding and kind to yourself is good for your mental health.

·   Get more from your sleep: - Anyone who has struggled with sleep will know what a difference it makes to our bodies, minds and ability to cope with life. For many people, sleep is often the first thing that suffers when we struggle with our mental health. Adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night, including enough dreaming sleep and enough deeper sleep.
