Smart Work vs Hard Work by RutuPallavi Harichandan Manager HR Aircrews Aviation Pvt Ltd

Smart Work vs Hard Work
"Dreams don’t work unless you do". Well, we have often heard that "Work smart and not hard", but what really is smart work! Does only smart work bring you success, and if so then why are so many of us still busy putting our blood and sweat in working hard to reach our goals? Whether we should opt for smart or hard work, and which will bring us more efficient results is one of the topics we often hear being discussed among people. Well, let’s break the ice and talk about SMART WORK vs HARD WORK.
So let’s start with some basic examples:
Ages back the cage man pushed his cart or huge pieces of stone for carrying it from one place to the other.
But the modern man made a wheelbarrow to easily carry his load and travel long distance with less effort and with more efficiency.
This is a classic example of smart work. When we work for a given task depending on its worth and put our effort and apply our brain in order to produce maximum result by using minimum labour then it is known as Smart Work.
Whereas Hard work is all about consistently working towards a particular goal irrespective of its worth and not being worried about the result or by not using any means to reduce your effort.
Hard work requires a lot of commitment and sincerity from the person and is not an easy one to follow. A hard worker needs to consistently work towards what he perceives to be worth it, no matter how challenging the situation is. Success for the Hard Worker comes after putting long hours at work which deprives him/her the comforts of life.
One of the pre requisites of Smart work is having an in-depth knowledge of the work in hand as that will make your work easy and you can look for efficient ways to do the work in a more planned and organized way.
Most of you might have heard this epic story of Hard work and smart work. If you have not heard of this then it is a perfect read for you
One day two woodcutters have argued, which of them will cut more wood during a day.
In the morning two men took up their positions. First they worked at one speed. But in an hour one of them has heard, that the other one stopped cutting trees. Realizing that this was his chance, the first woodcutter started to cut trees with double efforts.
Ten minutes passed, and he heard that the second woodcutter started to work again. They were working almost synchronously, when the first woodcutter heard that his opponent has stopped again. The first woodcutter continued working, feeling the smell of victory.
This lasted all day long. Each hour one of the woodcutters stopped for ten minutes and the other one continued to work. When time expired, the first woodcutter, who worked without any stopping, was absolutely sure that he won the prize.
He was very surprised to know that was mistaken.
How did that happen? He asked his partner. Each hour I heard that you have stopped the work for ten minutes. How could you cut more trees than I? It’s impossible!
It is very simple, in fact, answered the second woodcutter. Each hour I stopped the work for ten minutes. And when you were cutting the trees, I sharpened the axe.

Smartness is gradually acquired with persistent efforts and precise application of knowledge.
Here is another interesting story for you:
Once upon a time there was a poor labourer, he worked hard every day, breaking stones from nearby hills and selling it in the market. He worked hard every day from dust to dawn, but it was not enough to feed his family. One day he went to the shop of an artisan to sell the stone; he saw that artisan was selling beautiful stones to a merchant for thousands rupee. The labourer asked to the artisan, "from where do you get these beautiful stones, thinking that he will bring the stones from same place and in this was he will be able to earn more money." The artist replied, "these are the same stones which you sold me yesterday, I made small pieces of them and then made them into beautiful artefacts using my workmanship." The labourer became very sad and said that there is no value for my hard work. I work 9-10 hours daily in hot summers, but I am getting only 100-200 rupees only. And you are working few hours while sitting in your house and making thousands of rupees. You are not working as hard as me but still your earning is ten times more than mine. The artist replied, "The value of any commodity is determined not by the fact that so much effort has been kept into it, its value is determined by the fact by its utility is or how useful it is."
Last but not the list. Stories portray more than just words. We relate more to the stories so here is one more story for you.
Once there was a king who had three sons. King was aging and thought to put his boys on testimonials to prove their claim to throne. Out of various tasks/challenges one was for wittiness or smartness. King called upon his son and explained the task. The task was to fill one large room with only one substance and not even slightest of gap should be left and this should be done in half an hour. All the tree boys left the court and each of them moved in different direction to find such substance. One son thought of filling the room with equal shaped large stones, thinking so he ordered few servants to carry out the task. Second son thought of filling the room with hay and he too ordered some servants to carry out the task. The third one went to his dressing room and pick-up a small bottle filled with liquid and carried it to the large room allotted to him for task and sprinkled the liquid in all the directions of the room. After half an hour King summoned his sons, then the king went to each of the rooms to observe. The first two rooms, filled with stones & hay respectively, had minute gaps left between them through which sun rays passed so they failed the task. The third room was filled with fragrance of Jasmine, not a single corner was left without that smell. This was because the third son had sprinkled Jasmine perfume/fragrant water across the room.
One can attain great heights and lead a better and comfortable life if one incorporates both smart and hard work together.
