Think You're Good at Math? Prove It at QuantFest

You've probably heard terms like "quant firm," "HFT," or "quant trading" thrown around and wondered what they actually mean. In simple words, quantitative finance is about using math, statistics, and code to solve problems in trading and investing.

If you want to actually experience what this world feels like, QuantFest — a national-level competition run by IICPC — is a great place to start.

What Is QuantFest?

QuantFest tests the same kind of problem-solving skills that quant firms look for in real hiring rounds. It's not about memorizing finance theory — it's about solving hard, unfamiliar problems, the way you would on the job.

The 2026 edition runs in three stages:

  • Prelims — probability, combinatorics, graph theory, dynamic programming, and logical reasoning

  • Regionals — a mix of coding and probability-based problems

  • Finals — trading simulations and market-making challenges, held at IIT Madras Research Park

There's a prize pool of over ₹8 lakh, and finalists get a chance to meet recruiters from top quant firms.

Why Should You Care?

Quant hiring is famously tough. Firms want people who think fast, understand probability, and can code cleanly under pressure. QuantFest is a low-stakes way to test where you stand — and it can also help you:

  • Get a real feel for what quant work involves

  • Sharpen your probability and math thinking

  • Practice competitive programming

  • Try your hand at trading simulations

  • Meet other students who are into the same stuff

  • Get in front of recruiters, with fast-track interviews for top performers

So What Does a Quant Actually Do?

A quant uses math, stats, and code to solve problems in financial markets — building models to predict market behavior, writing algorithms that trade automatically, or digging through huge datasets to find patterns.

There are a few common paths:

Quant Researcher — builds the models. Needs probability, stats, Python/C++, and some machine learning.

Quant Trader — uses those models (plus gut instinct) to make trading calls. Needs sharp mental math and good decision-making under pressure.

Quant Developer — builds the systems that let strategies run fast and reliably. Needs strong C++, data structures, and low-latency engineering skills.

Who Hires Quants?

A few names come up again and again:

  • Jane Street — one of the biggest market-making firms in the world; it reportedly pulled in a record $39.6 billion in trading revenue in 2025

  • Citadel & Citadel Securities — a major multi-strategy and market-making powerhouse

  • Hudson River Trading — known for automated trading systems, great fit if you love C++ and algorithms

  • Two Sigma — heavy on research and data science

  • D. E. Shaw — a long-standing name in systematic investing

  • Optiver and IMC Trading — big in options and derivatives

  • Jump Trading, Tower Research Capital, and XTX Markets — known for high-speed, highly technical trading

Other names worth knowing: DRW, SIG, Virtu, Flow Traders, Akuna Capital, AQR, Millennium, Point72, and Graviton.

What Should You Learn?

If this sounds interesting, here's where to start:

  • Math: probability, statistics, combinatorics, linear algebra, calculus

  • Coding: Python, C++, data structures, algorithms, competitive programming

  • Markets: basics of stocks, derivatives, options, and how trading actually works

  • Problem-solving: this matters more than anything else on this list — most quant interviews test how you think, not what you've memorized

Do You Need a Finance Degree?

No. QuantFest and quant roles in general are more about how well you think than what you studied. If you're good at math, coding, or competitive programming, you're already a strong candidate — no finance background required.

Quant finance sounds intimidating from the outside, but at its core it's just math, logic, and code applied to markets. QuantFest is a chance to try it out before committing to it as a career — through real problems, simulations, and a shot at meeting the people who actually hire for these roles.
