Think You're Good at Math? Prove It at QuantFest

Think You're Good at Math? Prove It at QuantFest

You've probably heard terms like "quant firm," "HFT," or "quant trading" thrown around and wondered what they actually mean. In simple words, quantitative finance is about using math, statistics, and code to solve problems in trading and investing.

If you want to actually experience what this world feels like, QuantFest — a national-level competition run by IICPC — is a great place to start.

What Is QuantFest?

QuantFest tests the same kind of problem-solving skills that quant firms look for in real hiring rounds. It's not about memorizing finance theory — it's about solving hard, unfamiliar problems, the way you would on the job.

The 2026 edition runs in three stages:

  • Prelims — probability, combinatorics, graph theory, dynamic programming, and logical reasoning

  • Regionals — a mix of coding and probability-based problems

  • Finals — trading simulations and market-making challenges, held at IIT Madras Research Park

There's a prize pool of over ₹8 lakh, and finalists get a chance to meet recruiters from top quant firms.

Why Should You Care?

Quant hiring is famously tough. Firms want people who think fast, understand probability, and can code cleanly under pressure. QuantFest is a low-stakes way to test where you stand — and it can also help you:

  • Get a real feel for what quant work involves

  • Sharpen your probability and math thinking

  • Practice competitive programming

  • Try your hand at trading simulations

  • Meet other students who are into the same stuff

  • Get in front of recruiters, with fast-track interviews for top performers

So What Does a Quant Actually Do?

A quant uses math, stats, and code to solve problems in financial markets — building models to predict market behavior, writing algorithms that trade automatically, or digging through huge datasets to find patterns.

There are a few common paths:

Quant Researcher — builds the models. Needs probability, stats, Python/C++, and some machine learning.

Quant Trader — uses those models (plus gut instinct) to make trading calls. Needs sharp mental math and good decision-making under pressure.

Quant Developer — builds the systems that let strategies run fast and reliably. Needs strong C++, data structures, and low-latency engineering skills.

Who Hires Quants?

A few names come up again and again:

  • Jane Street — one of the biggest market-making firms in the world; it reportedly pulled in a record $39.6 billion in trading revenue in 2025

  • Citadel & Citadel Securities — a major multi-strategy and market-making powerhouse

  • Hudson River Trading — known for automated trading systems, great fit if you love C++ and algorithms

  • Two Sigma — heavy on research and data science

  • D. E. Shaw — a long-standing name in systematic investing

  • Optiver and IMC Trading — big in options and derivatives

  • Jump Trading, Tower Research Capital, and XTX Markets — known for high-speed, highly technical trading

Other names worth knowing: DRW, SIG, Virtu, Flow Traders, Akuna Capital, AQR, Millennium, Point72, and Graviton.

What Should You Learn?

If this sounds interesting, here's where to start:

  • Math: probability, statistics, combinatorics, linear algebra, calculus

  • Coding: Python, C++, data structures, algorithms, competitive programming

  • Markets: basics of stocks, derivatives, options, and how trading actually works

  • Problem-solving: this matters more than anything else on this list — most quant interviews test how you think, not what you've memorized

Do You Need a Finance Degree?

No. QuantFest and quant roles in general are more about how well you think than what you studied. If you're good at math, coding, or competitive programming, you're already a strong candidate — no finance background required.

Quant finance sounds intimidating from the outside, but at its core it's just math, logic, and code applied to markets. QuantFest is a chance to try it out before committing to it as a career — through real problems, simulations, and a shot at meeting the people who actually hire for these roles.

If you enjoy math, coding, and solving hard problems, it might be worth a look.

From PIN Code to Precise Point: India's New Way to Be Found

From PIN Code to Precise Point: India's New Way to Be Found

Finding an address in India isn't always straightforward. A PIN code narrows things down to a general area, but it can't tell a delivery rider or an ambulance driver exactly which house, shop, or gate to head for. That gap is what DigiPIN is built to close.

DigiPIN — short for Digital Postal Index Number — is India Post's new digital addressing system, designed to make locations easier to find and far more precise to describe.

What Is DigiPIN?

DigiPIN is a 10-character alphanumeric code that represents one specific patch of ground. While a traditional 6-digit PIN code can cover an entire town or neighbourhood, DigiPIN narrows things down to a single grid cell of roughly 4 by 4 metres — precise enough to point at one building rather than one block.

The code isn't arbitrary. It's generated directly from a location's latitude and longitude, so every DigiPIN is permanent and tied purely to geography — it won't change even as new roads are built or a neighbourhood is renumbered.

The system was developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), part of ISRO. It's also built to work offline, which matters in the many parts of India where internet connectivity is patchy at best.

Why India Needs Something Like This

Conventional addresses can be genuinely hard to navigate — especially in villages, remote hamlets, or newer urban pockets where street names and house numbers were never clearly assigned in the first place.

A delivery rider might have the correct street and house number written down and still spend twenty minutes circling the block. A precise DigiPIN removes most of that guesswork by pointing straight at the coordinates.

What DigiPIN Actually Improves

1. Faster, more reliable deliveries Postal and courier services can navigate straight to a location instead of decoding a written address, cutting down time wasted searching streets and neighbourhoods.

2. Quicker emergency response For ambulances, fire services, and disaster relief teams, minutes matter. A precise digital coordinate can shave critical time off a response.

3. More accurate e-commerce delivery With online shopping booming across India, DigiPIN offers a way to nail down delivery locations even where conventional addresses are vague or incomplete.

4. Addresses for places that never had one Many rural and remote areas lack formal house numbers or street names altogether. DigiPIN gives these locations a digital identity for the first time — India Post has pointed to over 600,000 villages that stand to benefit.

PIN Code vs. DigiPIN

Traditional PIN Code

DigiPIN

6 digits

10-character alphanumeric code

Covers a large geographical area

Pinpoints a location to ~4 metres

Mainly used for postal sorting

Built for precise digital addressing

Relies on written address details

Based purely on geographic coordinates

How to Find Your DigiPIN

Getting your own DigiPIN takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Visit India Post's official digital address portal.

  2. Allow location access, or search for your spot on the map.

  3. Your 10-character DigiPIN will be generated and displayed instantly.

  4. Save it — you can share it going forward wherever a precise location is needed.

You can generate yours at the official India Post DigiPIN portal.

What This Means for the Future

DigiPIN isn't just a longer PIN code — it's a shift toward addressing that's digital-first and location-based. From deliveries to emergency services to eKYC, it could quietly become infrastructure many everyday services rely on.

The traditional address isn't disappearing. But DigiPIN looks set to become the precise layer underneath it.

Webmaster vs. Web Developer: Two Jobs, One Website

Webmaster vs. Web Developer: Two Jobs, One Website

Launching a Website feels like the finish line. It isn't. The moment a site goes live, a new kind of work begins — updates, security checks, broken links, content changes, the works. That ongoing job usually falls to a Webmaster, not the developer who built the site.

What Does a Webmaster Actually Do?

A Webmaster is the person who keeps a Website running well after launch. Day to day, that can mean:

  • Updating content

  • Checking that pages and links still work

  • Watching site performance

  • Fixing small technical glitches

  • Managing security

  • Keeping an eye on SEO and search rankings

  • Handling hosting and domain renewals

  • Making sure the site works properly on phones and tablets

Put simply: a developer builds the Website, a Webmaster keeps it healthy. That said, the lines blur a lot in practice — plenty of Webmasters can code and pitch in on development work when it's needed.

Why Businesses Still Need Someone in This Role

A Website isn't a "build it once and forget it" thing. Products get added, Blogs go up, links quietly break, security threats evolve, and browsers and devices keep changing underneath everything. Somebody has to stay on top of all that.

Think of an online store adding new products every week, or a company site that needs a new Blog post or a fixed page on short notice. That's Webmaster work.

Why the Demand Doesn't Go Away

It's not that Webmasters are in higher demand than developers — it's that the demand comes from a different place:

Every Website needs upkeep. Even a site built five years ago still needs security patches and the occasional fix.

Content never stops changing. New services, new products, new Blog posts — someone has to keep publishing without rebuilding the whole site each time.

Things break without warning. Broken links, slow load times, outdated plugins, server hiccups — someone needs to catch these fast.

SEO needs constant attention. Staying fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to find on Google isn't a one-time job — it's ongoing maintenance.

Webmaster vs. Web Developer, Side by Side

Webmaster

Web Developer

Manages and maintains the site

Builds and develops the site

Handles day-to-day updates

Builds new features and functionality

Monitors performance and security

Writes and maintains the code

Fixes everyday issues

Builds new systems and applications

Focused on keeping things running

Focused on building things new

So Which Path Should You Pick?

There's no universal right answer here.

If you love writing code and building new features from scratch, Web development is probably your lane. If you'd rather manage a live site, solve technical problems as they come up, and work on SEO, content, and security, a Webmaster role might suit you better.

And if you can do both? Even better. Someone who can build a site and then keep it running is genuinely more valuable — they can step into either role depending on what a project needs.

Why This Role Isn't Going Anywhere

As more businesses live and die by their Websites, just "having a Website" stopped being enough a long time ago. Sites need to stay fast, secure, current, and easy to find — and that takes ongoing attention, not a one-time build.

A developer gets the Website built. A Webmaster makes sure it keeps working long after that. In today's Web, both jobs matter — and anyone who understands both sides has a real edge.
