USA is on the Path of Becoming a Developing Country

USA is on the Path of Becoming a Developing Country. It won’t happen overnight - it can be a matter of decades, or even centuries- but unless we steer the ship and make some
hard choices, that is where we are headed.

Let’s look at some characteristics of Developing and third-World Countries that we do meet at this point in history:

Aging and outdated Infrastructure.
Lack of Investment in Public Education.
Poorly Educated Population.
Segregation between Rich and Poor in Education, Housings and Jobs.
Poor, or non-existent public Healthcare systems.
Lack of low-cost, accessible housing.
Lack of a public safety net system.
Generalized mistrust of the police.
Dysfunctional prison system.
Extreme income disparities between the rich and the poor
Governmental dysfunction and gridlock.
Tax evasion at all levels.

High level corruption in all spheres of the government.
Autocratic presidents that look at their position as a means to enrich family and friends.

Here are some of the characteristics of Developing Countries that the US still does not have -but it is well on its way to get to this point.

Consumer protection is non-existent. In most Developing Countries, if you are injured by a defective car, or your credit card gets stolen - you are out of luck. America has great consumer protection agencies in place, and even though they often fail to jail perpetrator and compensate victims, there is a level of transparency that is unheard of anywhere in the World. But given how the World regulations make many break out in hives, it is just a matter of time until their power is greatly weakened, at our expense.

A corrupt justice system, where people can bribe judges to rule in their favor. Say what you want of the US, but its Court system is transparent and mostly fair. Enter arbitration and tort reform. This is nothing but the privatization of our justice system without giving us the opportunity to appeal. Every contract we now sign most likely will have an arbitration clause. And these contracts will only further weaken our consumer rights and puts on in a path where we will be unable to enforce basic regulations. This series from the NYT is particularly worth reading Arbitration Everywhere, Stacking the

Deck of Justice
Constitutional order. In Developing Countries, you always hear of Coups, or congress being dismantled. Americans are very proud of their constitution and would not tolerate the surge of a strongman. But right now, the gridlock that exists in our legislative body and congress will make the concept of a strongman more appealing. Enter Donald Trump -
the “I alone can fix it guy”. It is only a matter of time before he (or another man like him) asks to amend the constitution to give him more power to do as he wishes. And that,
my friends, won’t end well.
