[How to Manage Time Effectively as a workplace Manager cum Leader]

Many times, it seems that there is not enough time in the day. Then why do you think some people have achieved so much more than others while having the same 24 hr? The answer is ‘Time management’.
In this fast-growing business world of today, time is at a premium. Managing time effectively is one of the most crucial tasks of a workplace manager or a leader. There is this principle known as the ‘Pareto principle’ also called the 80:20 rule which says that of all the results that are produced in the day, 80% of those results are generated with only 20% of the efforts. The remaining 80% of the efforts only generate 20% of the results. Now here a challenge to the managers arises: how can they motivate and initiate the employees so that the remaining 80% of the efforts could be used to generate even better outputs.
Time management has its own advantages. It helps you to complete your task effectively in less time so that you get time for other things that are important to you. It also helps you to have a greater control over your life both at work and at home.
There are some techniques that managers could use in order to establish a successful time management at the workplace. The first is goal setting. There is a very famous theory given by ‘Locke and Lathan’ which states that effective goal setting helps in better time management as well as better performance because it motivates the employees. The goals should be specific and challenging rather than vague and simple. The next is S.M.A.R.T goals. The determined goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. This helps the employees to remain certain about what they need to achieve and in what time frame. This is a very effective tool to establish time management at the workplace. Backward goal setting is also very effective when it comes to time management. Under this, planning is done backwards. First the goals are set and then the process of achieving those goals are decided in a backward manner. This helps to obtain the goals in a predetermined time frame.
Some more effective ways in which managers could establish time management at the workplace are prioritization, delegation, managing interruptions and managing procrastination. Talking about prioritization, managers need to prioritize the work for the employees. It could be done at a personal level too. By prioritizing the work, no time is wasted on less priority work and adequate amount of time is invested in completing high priority tasks. Proper delegation of work is another very important aspect in any organization. Delegation helps in effective distribution of work among the employees and requires less time to complete the work. Interruptions and procrastinations are the disturbing factors of effective time management. The managers could reduce the interruptions during the working hours by establishing some strict rules and see that the employees adhere to it. Procrastination is something that disrupts time management. But this has to be dealt with at the personal level because the people need to understand why they are procrastinating and in what why it could be reduced.
